The project was designed to address the limitations of the “Korean HIV/AIDS Cohort Study,” which has been ongoing since 2006. The goal was to enhance the study by sufficiently reflecting the characteristics of people with HIV in Korea and aligning with the latest trends in HIV/AIDS. To this end, the project established two cohorts: a clinical cohort, which focuses on collecting core and standardized clinical indicators for people with HIV, and an insurance cohort, aimed at understanding the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the entire HIV population in Korea. The clinical cohort involves 15 institutions across diverse regions in Korea and has, to date, collected a total of 1,500 clinical case report forms from 923 participants. Due to the shortfall in the targeted number of enrolled participants, additional tasks and deliverables were established. These include: 1) Activating diverse sub-studies within the research team, 2) Utilizing cardiovascular disease prediction models to provide indicators for people with HIV, 3) Conducting analyses for UNAIDS 95-95-95 monitoring. As a result, an analytical methods to annually measure and present UNAIDS 95-95-95 indicators were proposed. To ensure smooth cohort operations, several measures were implemented, such as standardized training for investigators, distribution of survey guidelines, development/modification/refinement of survey tools, and data cleaning. Furthermore, given the sensitive nature of this cohort study, a secure web-based questionnaire system was developed to facilitate external network access while maintaining robust security measures. The insurance cohort focused on establishing operational definitions of HIV diagnosis. Plans are in place to combine the cohort with data from the National Health Insurance Service and Statistics Korea mortality data. Additionally, operational definitions for HIV/AIDS-related information were revised and improved to enhance utility for researchers. To fully reflect the characteristics of people with HIV in Korea and achieve cutting-edge research outcomes aligned with the latest HIV/AIDS trends, five working groups were formed. A total of 10 research topics were reviewed, approved, and are currently undergoing analysis. Regular quarterly seminars were held to share progress on each topic and incorporate feedback from internal researchers actively. These efforts are anticipated to yield research outcomes that contribute to the prognosis and management of people with HIV in Korea. During the project period, a total of seven research papers were published, with additional publications expected even after the project's conclusion, based on ongoing research activities.
