The Korea Nurses’ Health Study (KNHS) is the first prospective cohort study in Korea targeting reproductive-age female nurses. Its objective is to identify the determinants of women’s health in Korea by investigating how health status, lifestyle, and occupational characteristics impact women’s health. The study population includes female nurses in their 20s and those who voluntarily participated in follow-up surveys from the 2013 baseline survey of the first KNHS phase, which initially included 20,613 participants. Data collection was conducted through online or mobile surveys. During the first phase of the KNHS (2013–2015), 1st–4th surveys and the early pregnancy and postpartum ver.1 survey were developed. In the second phase (2016–2019), 5th-7th surveys were conducted, and biological samples (blood, urine, and toenails) were collected from 2,000 participants. In the third phase (2019–2021), 8th-10th surveys, the food frequency questionnaire, and additional surveys related to COVID-19 were conducted. The fourth phase of the KNHS, conducted from 2022 to 2024 following the first three phases, developed 11th-13th surveys, the initial version of the 14th survey, and the early pregnancy and postpartum ver.2 survey. In the first year (2022), the 11th survey was conducted from October 21, 2022, to April 6, 2023, involving 10,256 returning participants and 1,000 new participants in their 20s. In the second year (2023), the 12th survey and the early pregnancy and postpartum ver.2 survey were conducted from August 7, 2023, to December 26, 2023, involving 10,153 returning participants, 808 participants who joined in the 11th survey, and an additional 1,002 new participants in their 20s. In the third year (2024), the 13th survey was conducted from May 31, 2024, to October 31, 2024, involving 10,191 returning participants, 1,430 participants from surveys 11 and 12, and 3,114 new participants in their 20s. Recruitment of new participants in their 20s for the 11th, 12th surveys is ongoing, and the development of the 14th survey is currently in progress. Participants who were pregnant or gave birth during the study were invited to complete early pregnancy and postpartum surveys. The early pregnancy and postpartum ver.1 surveys were closed in 2023, with 2,179 participants completing the early pregnancy survey and 2,790 completing the postpartum survey between July 14, 2014, and July 12, 2023. The early pregnancy and postpartum ver.2 survey, developed on September 1, 2023, involved 698 participants in the early pregnancy survey, 332 in the food frequency questionnaire during early pregnancy, and 536 in the postpartum survey through October 31, 2024. In 2023, data cleaning for the 10th and 11th surveys was completed, and the data were submitted to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Additionally, refined datasets from the 1st-4th surveys were reviewed for public release. The 1st survey dataset was made publicly available through the Clinical Omics Data Archive (CODA) in 2023, and datasets from the 2nd-4th surveys were released in 2024. Data cleaning for the 12th survey was completed in 2024, and a quality management report was submitted to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. During the fourth phase, eight research articles were published in SCI-level international journals, and one was published in a SCOPUS-level journal. The findings addressed various women’s health issues, including dysmenorrhea, postpartum depression, workplace violence, early pregnancy work characteristics, and migraines, all closely linked to psychological and physical health. For instance, longitudinal analysis revealed that psychological factors are not predictive for migraines, providing a novel perspective compared to previous studies. The mediating role of depression in the relationships between workplace violence, depression, and turnover intention were also clarified. Additionally, international comparisons of postpartum depression and related factors offered in-depth insights. These findings expand existing knowledge and provide a foundation for understanding the complex dimensions of women’s health and developing effective solutions. The fourth phase of the KNHS is significant for its systematic collection of comprehensive women’s health data that represents not only nurses but also women. Follow up surveys conducted on a regular basis covered a wide range of topics, including medical history, work characteristics, lifestyle, emotions and health perceptions, women’s health, and pregnancy and delivery. To address age distribution imbalance, 5,116 new participants in their 20s were recruited during the three years of the fourth phase. The accumulated women’s health data are expected to serve as critical evidence for establishing public health policies to address major challenges in women’s health in South Korea.
